Easter Morning Reflection

It’s been a long time since I gave Easter much thought. But here I am. Thinking about Jesus.

Thinking about that one of the more popular lines from a zillion years ago:

“Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.”
Black and white photo of cross with 2 birds sitting on it. Ethereal and somber vibe throughout.

As a kid, more than the stories of his rising from the dead, I remember being in awe of Jesus on the cross.

My preacher dad must’ve shared the story a thousand times, and I listened to every word.

Just wow.

I mean—WOW.

Not just the suffering, but the choice—to love anyway.

That’s a wild kind of love.

A kind I’m still not sure I fully understand, especially when I struggle to like—let alone love—people in my own life.

But this Easter morning, I’ve been sitting with that line.

Not as theology, but as truth.

About this big ol’ messy world we live in.

We know not what we do.

Yesterday, I read a Facebook thread. A woman was judged for parking in a handicapped spot because her disability wasn’t “obvious.”

It was truly unfortunate. The comments were mixed.

Many showed love—encouraging her to stay strong, tend to her needs, and reminding us all how we can do better.

And then... there were others.

Cheering for shame.

Calling for cell phones.

Encouraging folks to record and blast the one who dared to judge her.

Blast the asshole.

Make an example of the asshole!!! IT'S YOUR DUTY!

I’ve apologized for it my whole life, but that’s just not how I’m wired.

Maybe it’s Easter whispering in my bones this morning, but I can’t stop thinking:

We know not what we do.

We react instead of reflect.

We cancel instead of connect.

We perform outrage instead of process pain.

And yet… the invitation of Easter still stands:

Rise anyway.

Love anyway.

Forgive—even when it makes no damn sense.

We know not what we do.

Until when?

Until we remember.

Until we soften.

Until we get curious instead of cruel.

Until someone—any one of us—interrupts the cycle and chooses mercy over mockery.

Until love leads.

Pick one. Pick me!

I choose We.

Choose it. Choose that.

I choose Free.

Fuck them. Fuck that.

Love them. Love that.

Close up. Lock down. React.

Open.

Arms outstretched.

I. Am. Love.
